The community food co-operative programme helps people access fresh fruit and vegetables on a weekly basis at wholesale prices. We know that most of us in Wales eat much less than the recommended level of five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. In 2004 only 41% of all adults in Wales reported eating five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day is important and it could lead to a 20% reduction in deaths from diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer, not to mention helping you maintain a healthy weight.
Community food co-operatives provide access to fruit and vegetables which are:
- good quality
- affordable and
- from locally produced sources wherever possible.
The Penparcau food coop operates out of the Communities First office every Thursday. Orders are taken and paid for a week in advance. Bags of fresh fruit and vegetables can be purchased for £3.00 per bag and customers can order either fruit or veg or both. Orders can be taken on a weekly basis or as often as wished.
